47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Matt. 28: 47-56 (NIV)
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
Luke 22:51 (NIV)
In the US, statistics tell us that for every 100 citizens there are 112.6 guns. As a nation, we as citizens own more guns per capita than any other nation on earth (Number of guns per capita by country). According to this chart the number 2 nation is Serbia at 69.7. To give another perspective: The United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales—our mother country—is #82 on that list at only 6.6 guns per hundred citizens. What might these particular statistics be trying to tell us? That we in the United States are living in a culture of violence?!
In Iceland, one third of all citizens are armed — but police officers are not most of the time
When police shot a man in Iceland in 2013, it was the first time cops had used their firearms and killed a person in the history of this country, according to the Christian Science Monitor. Granted, Iceland is a tiny country with only 300,000 inhabitants. However, one third of the country’s population is armed with rifles and shotguns for hunting purposes, making it the 15th most armed country per capita in the world. Despite this, crime is extremely rare.
The biggest quandary for me during this election season is how conservatists are able to make the connection in their brains between the message of Jesus and some of its obvious peaceful concepts that are right there with it with their conservatist political talking points which are undeniably in direct opposition to this message in both content and energy. How can they reconcile these two opposing forces when witnessing about Jesus to those who don’t yet know Him. As they are thus engaged in this effort, they would do well to take a few steps back to look in the mirror at both themselves and at the image they are concocting for Jesus in as well. Whether they mean to or whether they can see it or not they are portraying Him as some sort of a schizo deity. On the other hand maybe this image isn’t such a new image for God as we look at the narrative depicting the Old Testament God. In fact the Christian penchant for the Old Testament God and their reluctance to stray too far from Him and His mixed bag of commandments and conditions may be at the heart of the matter. If conservative Christians continue pushing this Old Testament message and image which is both an outdated and self-destructive representation of God—while continuing to ignore the new gospel message of Jesus Christ—they will continue shooting themselves in the foot and pushing potential converts away. In this campaign they’ve become their own worst enemies.
In the chart of worldwide gun ownership we can see that the US is clearly in the lead with 1.126 guns per citizen. This link: Obama, wiping tears, makes new push to tighten gun rules shows the president resorting to extreme measures (signing an executive order) to get a gun law through. One of the changes this law would provide is to close a loophole that now exists allowing people to buy otherwise illegal class III, full automatic weapons. The reason the president wishes to close this loophole is due to the fact that the sales of these kinds of weapons, through this loophole, have risen from 900 (in 2000) to 90,000 (in 2014). In the past year there have been 13,346 gun related deaths in the US. We in America are caught out on a runaway train of violence and self-righteousness that is our culture. Ours is a culture that is laced with gun-toting, Bible-thumbing conservatists and all of their ass-kicking rhetoric into which they have dragged Jesus, Himself right into the middle of. He sitting right up there on the dashboard of the locomotive as it’s accelerating on down the mountainside rails with the likes of Trump and Cruz in there shoveling in coal as fast as they can. Where is the peace and love message of the real Jesus? What is the fate of this message? Who are the caretakers of this message? Are there any liberal Christians doing it or is this message only able to be brought by non-Christian-specific liberals? Is the traditional Christian message destined to move forward on in the rhetoric and actions of the Christian conservatists who keep talking and preaching the gospel of the Jesus Clone (AKA the Antichrist)? It really doesn’t appear as though the Christian conservatists are going to be changing their tune anytime soon, does it? So if not these Christians which Christians? Just like we see the gun lobbyists selling their messed up, pro-gun message as being the one that’s best for America; we see the Evangelical and other Christian conservatists selling their gospel of fear—featuring their psycho, bully Jesus—as being the message of divine truth for America.
